SXSW: SUSPECTED DRUNK DRIVER PLOWS INTO CROWD KILLING 2, INJURING 23.
[HipHollywood] Two people were killed early Thursday morning after a suspected drunk driver, fleeing cops plowed into a crowd at the SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas. According to the Austin Police Department, the man and woman who lost their lives were riding a moped when the accident occurred.
During a news conference, authorities confirmed that at least 23 others were hospitalized. “We had a large crowd,” Art Acevedo, chief of the APD said. “I just thank God that a lot of the folks had already been pushed on the sidewalk or this could have been a lot worse.”
Acevedo added, “There is only one person responsible for this, someone with no regard for the sanctity of life. Our focus is on gathering evidence and seeking justice for the people who lost their lives.”
The suspect was reportedly driving the wrong way down a one way street and when officers tried to pull him over, he sped off. That’s when the suspect ran into barricades on a busy street where several clubs are located. The suspect is currently in custody and will face two counts of capital murder and 23 counts of aggravated assault by a vehicle.
When the accident took place, rapper, Tyler, the Creator was getting ready to hit the stage for the Vans showcase. Tyler took to Twitter to announce that the show was not happening.
“Show Isnt Happening, Something Sad Happened. I’m Bummed,” he wrote.
At that point, we are pretty sure Tyler didn’t know the severity of the incident.
